A dental crown is a tooth-shaped “cap” that is placed over the entire tooth to cover and restore its shape, size and strength, as well as to improve appearance.

If there is insufficient natural tooth structure or a tooth is at risk of fracture, a crown may be recommended. Crowns can be fixed onto “live” teeth or after a tooth has undergone root canal treatment. When cemented into place, the crown fully encases the entire visible portion of a tooth that lies at and above the gum line.
